UNICO I+D PROJECT MEET UP: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF EU COMPETITIVENESS TOGETHER
12th of December 2024 – Madrid, Spain
ELADAIS co-hosted the 2024 UNICO I+D Project Meet Up with the ENABLE 6G project, hosted at the prestigious Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The UNICO I+D Cloud programme has a programme portfolio made up of 16 projects, and 8 of them are led by institutions and teams all based in the Madrid region.
“What we wanted for this project was to prepare a platform to have three pillars which include a data market and infrastructure that makes it possible to be open source and translate the data into the common market and be able to analyse it for doctors in a hospital”. –Ernestina Menasalvas, Professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
An opportunity for collaboration
The UNICO I+D Cloud programme has brought together a wide range of projects together that each provide significant value towards the objectives of Horizon Europe, which include boosting innovation, enhancing European competitiveness, strengthening the EU technological base, addressing global challenges, and ensuring inclusiveness. This event provided the opportunity to support collaboration between each of the organisations that participated, especially with reference to strengthening the connection with EU level initiatives of reference.
Strengthening EU competitiveness with ground-breaking research
The event began with a warm welcome to all of the organisations and participants from Prof. Ernestina Menasalvas (UPM) followed by BluSpecs Managing Consultant Brendan Rowan, who gave an overview of the event and the agenda for the day. This hybrid event invited both in-person and virtual attendees. A variety of projects were showcased in the event which included ELADAIS, INESData, MAP-6G, RISC-6G, IPCEI Cloud, GAIA-X, European Data Spaces, MLEDGE, AMOR, Data&Cloud Continuum, and the EU Cloud-Edge.
The first round of presentations included Prof. Ernestina Menasalvas (UPM) Prof. Oscar Corcho (UPM), Dr. Timothy Otim (IMDEA), and Ioannis Arapakis (Telefónica), who presented the key use cases and demonstrators for ELADAIS, INESData, and MAP – 6G.
“When the future networks of 6G develop, applications will be more diverse, but it builds the challenge to guarantee and security of the privacy of users.” – Dr. Timothy Otim from IMDEA Networks Institute
The event also provided the opportunity for the participants to network during the coffee break before the second half of the event began. The second round of presentations included the introduction of projects that drive links with the European strategic initiative which include the IPCEI Cloud, European Data Spaces, and GAIA-X by speakers Alberto P. Martí (OpenNebula Systems) and Daniel Sáez Domingo (ITI)
Following this, the audience was taught by Stefan Bogensberger (European Commission), Rolf Riemenschneider (European Commission) the about the relevance of the EU Cloud-Edge as a driver of EU Competitiveness who also elaborated on the “3C Network” (Innovation, Collaboration, Investment.
In the final round of presentations, use cases from the Data&Cloud Continuum, RISC-6G, MLEDGE, and AMOR projects were explained by Prof. Marta Patiño (UPM), Alberto Roman (Acurito), Dr. Timothy Otim (IMDEA), José A. Ayala Romero (NEC Corporation), Giovanni Geraci (Telefónica), Javad Dogani (IMDEA), Carlos Ángel Iglesias (UPM). It was an engaging session in which each presentation shed light on the innovative approaches and practical applications these projects bring to the table.
After a brief and engaging Q&A session, the event ended with Brendan Rowan thanking each organisation, presenter, and attendee in his closing remarks. With the presentations finished, participants got together to network and discuss with their peers. It was a thrilling atmosphere that included researchers and industry experts coming together to get to know each other.
Stay tuned for updates on these exciting projects via our website and social media platforms as these projects are setting the stage for Europe to remain at the forefront of cutting-edge advancements in connectivity and digital transformation for a wide range of industries.
